Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson delivered a match-winning performance over the weekend, scoring twice as Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League, bringing an end to City's seven-game winning run to start the season.
Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a clinical finish, firing the ball into the top corner after receiving a pass from John McGinn. Although City's Erling Haaland leveled the score in the 52nd minute, Jackson struck again just eight minutes later to seal the victory for Villa. The winning goal came after teenage Senegalese international Ibrahim Mbaye set up Jackson, who squeezed his shot past City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Since his move from Chelsea to Aston Villa, Jackson has been in impressive form, netting seven goals in 11 appearances. The defeat leaves Manchester City atop the Premier League table, but only by goal difference ahead of defending champions Arsenal.
Across Europe's top leagues, several other African players made headlines with notable performances. In England, Burkina Faso winger Dango Ouattara scored his first goal of the season for Brentford, salvaging a 1-1 draw at Hull City. Ouattara found the net in the 63rd minute from Igor Thiago's pass, canceling out Oli McBurnie's first-half penalty. However, the result extended Brentford's winless streak to three matches.
In Spain's La Liga, Ghana international Inaki Williams contributed to Athletic Bilbao's commanding 4-0 victory over Getafe. Williams scored the second goal following a counterattack, finishing with a low shot after finding himself one-on-one with the Getafe goalkeeper. His younger brother, 2026 World Cup winner Nico Williams, also came close to scoring during the match.
Serie A witnessed a spectacular goal from Cameroon midfielder Andre-Frank Anguissa, who opened the scoring for Napoli in their thrilling 3-3 draw against Roma. In the 28th minute, Anguissa executed a brilliant bicycle kick that found the corner of the net after Roma failed to clear a free-kick.
In the Bundesliga, Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy was a constant menace for Borussia Dortmund in their 1-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, despite not finding the scoresheet. Early in the first half, Guirassy broke through on goal but saw his chip saved by goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Shortly after halftime, he directed a header from a corner against the crossbar and later came inches away from scoring when his shot sailed just wide of the left post.
French Ligue 1 saw Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi and Morocco international Sofiane Diop lead Nice to a 2-1 comeback victory at Brest. Wahi equalized just after the hour mark following a corner, while Diop capitalized on a defensive error to score the winner in the 83rd minute, securing all three points for the mid-table side.
