Aston Villa delivered a statement performance in the Champions League on Wednesday night, crushing Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park in what stands as the club's most dominant European victory in their history. The emphatic triumph also marked their first home win of the season and maintained their perfect record in this year's elite continental competition.
Unai Emery's squad needed little time to assert their dominance. Swiss forward Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a memorable evening that coincided with his 21st birthday. After Matteo Guendouzi's misplaced header fell into his path, Manzambi controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful strike that deflected off Milan Skriniar and flew past goalkeeper Ederson. The young striker became only the second player in Champions League history to score on his debut on his birthday.
Nicolas Jackson proved to be the star of the night, netting twice before halftime to put the match beyond doubt. The Senegal international's first came in the 31st minute when Fenerbahce carelessly gave away possession. Boubacar Kamara threaded a precise pass to Jackson at the edge of the box, and the forward calmly slotted home past Ederson.
Jackson doubled his tally just before the break, firing a low drive from 18 yards that proved too powerful for the goalkeeper to handle. Despite getting a hand to it, Ederson could only push the ball into his own net. The brace brought Jackson's tally to five goals in eight appearances since his August move from Chelsea.
The second half brought no respite for the Turkish visitors. Ross Barkley converted from the penalty spot after Ismail Yuksek fouled Manzambi inside the area. Four minutes later, Barkley struck again, meeting Ibrahim Mbaye's cross with a shot that took a deflection off Bartug Elmaz before finding the net.
Tammy Abraham, introduced as a substitute, completed the rout in stoppage time by tapping in Alysson's cross to seal Villa's record-breaking victory.
The win comes at a crucial time for Villa, who have struggled at home this season. Villa Park's North Stand remains closed for expansion works that will increase capacity beyond 50,000. Prior to this match, concerns had grown about whether the reduced crowd size and atmosphere were affecting the team's performances, with Villa winless in their previous three home fixtures.
Currently sitting 16th in the Premier League, Villa have now extended their unbeaten streak to four matches across all competitions. After a turbulent summer that saw the departures of key players including Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa, the Europa League holders appear to be finding their rhythm once more.
Fenerbahce forward Mason Greenwood, playing his first match in England in four years following his controversial spell at Manchester United, faced constant jeers from the home supporters throughout the evening but had little impact on proceedings.
Villa had previously defeated Fenerbahce 1-0 in Turkey during last season's Europa League campaign in January, but this encounter proved far more one-sided, showcasing the English side's growing confidence in European competition.
