Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has stood by his outspoken criticism of the club's management following Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, stating that his remarks were motivated by his ambition to see United compete for top trophies.
The Argentina international took to Instagram on Wednesday to address the controversy surrounding his post-match comments, in which he had openly challenged director of football Jason Wilcox over transfer policy and urged greater financial backing for squad reinforcements. While acknowledging his frustration influenced his words, Martinez declined to issue an apology.
'After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,' Martinez explained in his social media statement. 'Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win. And when things don't go our way, it hurts, especially when representing a club with the history and stature of Manchester United.'
The 26-year-old centre-back emphasized that his comments stemmed from genuine concern for the club's direction and competitiveness at the highest level. 'My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours,' he added.
Martinez was careful to stress that players bear primary responsibility for on-field performance. 'I know that, first and foremost, it's us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility,' he stated. 'We need to demand even more of ourselves and work together to take Manchester United back to the top.'
The defeat in Madrid marked United's fifth consecutive match without a victory across all competitions, intensifying pressure on head coach Michael Carrick as the club navigates their return to Europe's premier club competition after a two-season absence.
Despite the public nature of his criticism, Martinez expressed continued faith in the team's collective efforts. 'I believe in my teammates, our manager and everyone working to help this club move forward,' he wrote. 'I'm convinced that the way forward is to keep working together, with ambition and commitment.'
Manchester United have not issued an official response to Martinez's original remarks or his follow-up statement. However, multiple reports from ESPN and Sky Sports indicate that Wilcox continues to enjoy the confidence of the club's senior leadership despite the defender's public questioning of recruitment strategy.
